La pape est vêtu de pied en cap par Gammarelli.
Depuis 1922, la maison Gammarelli conçoit les tenues officielles du pape : soutane blanche, ceinture sur les hanches, calotte blanche et les fameuses chaussures rouges. Six générations de tailleurs ont fait la renommée de cet établissement.
Une mission délicate à laquelle les tailleurs experts de Gammarelli sont habitués, comme l’attestent les portraits accrochés au mur représentant tous les papes qui se sont fournis chez eux, ainsi que les certificats attestant du statut de Gammarelli en tant que fournisseur officiel du Vatican.
«Les tissus dans lesquels nous réalisons les soutanes sont en pure laine. Il n’y pas de laine spéciale pour le Saint-Père, c’est le tissu classique qu’on utilise pour tous nos clients qui s’habillent de blanc. Outre le Saint-Père, il s’agit de missionnaires et de certains ordres monastiques», explique doctement cet expert ès mode ecclésiastique.

La maison Gammarelli est un atelier de couture romain spécialisé dans les vêtements ecclésiastiques. Il a été fondé dans les années 1790 par la famille Gammarelli. Installée au no 34 de la rue Santa Chiara depuis 1846, près du Panthéon, la boutique est le fournisseur exclusif des vêtements des papes depuis plusieurs décennies. Aujourd’hui, Annibale Gammarelli, qui a fortement développé l’activité, transmet petit à petit tout son savoir à ses deux neveux et fils.

Gammarelli est très connu pour ses chaussettes rouges, de célèbres personnalités politiques portent des chaussettes Gammarelli comme Édouard Balladur et François Fillon.
