Le Canal Educatif à la Demande (CED) est une initiative philanthropique qui a pour objet de « compléter l’Ecole à domicile », en donnant la possibilité à tous les élèves et toutes les familles d’accéder gratuitement et « à la demande » au « capital culturel » nécessaire pour relier les savoirs scolaires à un sentiment d’utilité ou de grandeur. Fils du peintre Hans Holbein l’Ancien (vers 1465 – 1524), il est le frère cadet du peintre Ambrosius Holbein (vers 1493/94 – vers 1519), avec lequel il étudie dans l’atelier paternel.
En 1515, sa famille se fixa à Bâle, haut lieu de l’humanisme, où il se lia avec Érasme. De 1516 à 1526, travaillant pour la haute bourgeoisie commerçante, il réalisa des portraits, compositions religieuses, décorations murales, cartons de vitraux et des gravures et le musée d’art de la ville de Bâle possède ainsi la plus importante collection au monde d’œuvres de la famille Holbein.
Influencé par Matthias Grünewald, son style s’ouvrit aux nouvelles conceptions de la Renaissance italienne.En 1526, fuyant la Réforme, il partit pour Londres, recommandé par Érasme à Thomas More. Cette époque constitua l’apogée de sa carrière. Il exécuta le projet d’un arc de triomphe pour l’entrée d’Anne Boleyn à Londres et peignit Les Ambassadeurs en 1533. Le tableau Les Ambassadeurs est particulier. En effet, une partie de cette œuvre est réalisé selon le procédé de l’anamorphisme (* Anamorphose, image qui apparaît quand on change d’angle de vue ). Ainsi, si notre regard se positionne par rapport à la tranche gauche du tableau, on voit apparaître un crâne humain au milieu des deux personnages. La présence de ce crâne fait également de ce tableau un « memento mori », qui rappelle à l’humilité. Les deux personnages représentés étant invités à se souvenir qu’ils sont mortels comme tout un chacun.
