Visualiser des tableaux en très grand format sur le web, voici le défi qu’a relevé le University College of London.

C’est en utilisant l’ application de la technologie de Google Maps que la solution a été trouvée : elle pré-découpe la représentation (ci-dessous une toile de la collection Kremer ) en tuiles (« tiles » selon la terminologie googlienne) conformément aux règles de l’API de Google Maps puis les donne à « digérer » en temps réel.

On retrouve tout l’ergonomie efficace de Google Maps: zoom, translation via la souris , miniature de localisation …

Le logiciel Google Maps Image Cutter coupe une image de grande taille en petites images de  256×256 pixel. En suite on navigue sur des images de taille : 256, 512, 1024, 2048 and 4096 pixels

On retrouve cette fonctionnalité sur Flex ou Silverlight.
